IAEA Confirms Damage to Iranian Nuclear Sites, Urges Diplomatic Action

NEW YORK, June 23 (Alliance News): Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, briefed the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on the recent US strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities, confirming visible damage to key sites and warning against further escalation.

In an official statement issued by the agency, Grossi reported that Iran’s Fordow uranium enrichment facility had been “directly affected,” although the extent of the damage remains undetermined.

The report also confirmed that the US strikes targeted nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — all of which are under IAEA safeguards.

The Isfahan facility, already hit multiple times by Israeli attacks in the past, suffered further damage in the recent offensive.

However, Iranian authorities have notified the IAEA that radiation levels have not increased, indicating that no major radioactive leaks have occurred as a result of the strikes.

Grossi emphasized the urgency of diplomacy, stating that the current trajectory of hostilities could undermine global nuclear safety norms.

“Countries concerned need to take immediate diplomatic measures to prevent hostile actions and avoid setting a dangerous precedent,” the statement warned.

The IAEA reiterated that its mandate is solely technical and focused on monitoring compliance with international nuclear non-proliferation agreements.

However, the agency warned that repeated military strikes on safeguarded facilities threaten not only the nuclear security of the region, but also the credibility of international law.

Grossi’s remarks come amid a growing international outcry over US military action, which followed Israeli offensives and heightened tensions between Iran and Western powers.

Global leaders, including those from Pakistan, China, and Russia, have condemned the strikes, calling them violations of international norms.
