MELBOURNE, July 9, 2026 (Alliance News): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said Australia has a historic opportunity to support India’s expanding nuclear energy programme through increased uranium exports, ahead of high-level talks with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
Addressing a business forum in Melbourne, Modi said Australia’s vast uranium reserves could play a key role in India’s efforts to significantly expand nuclear power generation in the coming years.
Australia holds around 28 percent of the world’s known uranium resources, but exports to India have been limited due to legal and political considerations.
Modi said greater cooperation in the nuclear energy sector would strengthen bilateral ties and create new opportunities for both countries.
Prime Minister Albanese praised Modi’s leadership, saying his engagement had been instrumental in deepening Australia-India relations.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss trade, investment, energy cooperation and regional security during their summit.
India’s growing diaspora in Australia has become the country’s largest overseas-born community, according to recent official statistics.
Modi is scheduled to attend a community gathering in Melbourne later on Thursday before travelling to New Zealand for the next leg of his regional visit.
