NEW DELHI, Aug 29 (Alliance News): The Indian Army has signed an agreement with the United States to purchase Javelin anti-tank missile systems, the US embassy in India said on Friday.
The value of the agreement was not disclosed.
The medium-range guided missile system, jointly produced by Lockheed Martin and RTX, is designed to engage a range of targets, including armoured vehicles, according to the US embassy.
The Javelin system is already in service with the US Army and Marine Corps, as well as with several international customers.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said the agreement would create new opportunities for defence industries in both countries to cooperate.
“We see tremendous potential for future cooperation that strengthens the defence industrial bases of both countries,” Gor said.
The Indian government was not immediately available for comment on the agreement.
The deal comes after India and the United States signed a 10-year defence framework agreement in October, aimed at strengthening long-term military cooperation between the two countries.
The latest agreement comes despite growing strains in broader India-US relations.
Washington has imposed high tariffs on Indian goods, taken measures over New Delhi’s purchases of Russian oil and strengthened engagement with Pakistan, India’s regional rival.
Despite these differences, the defence relationship between India and the United States has continued to develop.
The Javelin acquisition is expected to add to India’s existing anti-armour capabilities while providing another area of cooperation between the defence industries of the two countries.
