Lukashenko Urges Trade Unions to Be Pillars of Social Stability in Belarus

MINSK, Jul 17 (Alliance News): President Aleksandr Lukashenko of Belarus on Wednesday underscored the critical role of trade unions in ensuring social stability across the country.

Speaking during a meeting with Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus, Yuri Senko, the president described trade unions as the most influential organizational force in Belarus, even more so than political parties.

Lukashenko encouraged Senko to use his fresh perspective—following his previous leadership in the customs service—to assess trade union activities and recommend improvements.

“I very much hope that our trade unions will be a well-organized, powerful instrument to promote social stability,” the president remarked.

He noted that trade unions are currently the most structured and effective “party-like” bodies in the country.

Emphasizing their influence, Lukashenko said he continues to monitor trade union performance closely and appreciates their proactive role in socio-political affairs, including electoral support.

“Most of you are focused on people and labor collectives, and I always support that,” he added.

During the meeting, Lukashenko invited an open discussion on any shortcomings in union operations.

Topics on the agenda included overtime policies, international activities, land parcel transfers, and legal documentation for long-term land use.

He also asked Senko to evaluate the performance of the Belarusian customs service, given his former role as head of the State Customs Committee.

“There are no former generals,” Lukashenko said, encouraging Senko to remain engaged with his former department.
