Trump Hints at Turning the Screws on China Over Russian Oil

WASHINGTON, Aug 8 (Alliance News): US President Donald Trump has signalled he may hit China with new tariffs if it continues buying oil from Russia — just days after imposing the same measure on India.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Trump said additional trade penalties against Beijing “could happen”, but gave no details.

“It may happen… I can’t tell you yet,” Trump said. “We did it with India. We’re doing it probably with a couple of others. One of them could be China.”

On Wednesday, the White House slapped an extra 25% tariff on Indian goods, doubling the rate from a previous measure, over New Delhi’s continued imports of Russian oil.

While China was not named in that order, it is one of Moscow’s largest oil customers. Last week, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also warned Beijing it could face similar penalties if it does not cut purchases.

Washington has been stepping up secondary sanctions to pressure countries trading with Moscow during the war in Ukraine.
