WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Alliance News): US President Donald Trump has announced what he described as the “most crushing economic operation ever” against Iran, warning countries and businesses providing economic support to Tehran of severe consequences.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump accused Iran of rejecting opportunities for a deal and said Washington would pursue economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale.
He warned against oil smuggling, cash transfers, exchange houses, ship registries, swap lines and front companies that could provide Iran with an economic lifeline, saying those activities must stop immediately.
Trump called the measures an “economic D-Day” and urged US allies to support efforts to isolate Iran. He also reiterated that Iran would never be allowed to acquire a nuclear weapon.
The announcement came amid conflicting signals over possible US-Iran negotiations. Trump has previously indicated that talks could take place, while Tehran has said it remains open to diplomacy but will not negotiate from a position of weakness.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said negotiations should protect Iran’s sovereignty and interests, while Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused Washington of seeking to control regional resources.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Asim Munir, discussing regional developments, diplomatic efforts and possible political solutions.
Tensions remain high over the conflict, the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme as diplomatic efforts continue.
