NEW YORK, Feb 22 (Alliance News) – The United Nations has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, urging both sides to resolve disputes through diplomacy and dialogue.
A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted growing apprehension over increased military maneuvers, war exercises, and naval deployments in the region.
The statement comes a day after Iran formally warned the UN that it would exercise its right to self-defense in the event of any aggression, holding the United States accountable for potential consequences.
The warning follows reports of heightened US military activity, including the deployment of the US Second Fleet Gerald Ford, equipped with fighter jets, into the Mediterranean Sea, and the stationing of additional fighter jets at US air bases in Portugal.
British media reports suggest that any potential US military action could target Iranian leadership directly, further intensifying the risk of confrontation.
Analysts warn that the situation significantly increases the possibility of conflict in the Middle East, posing threats to regional stability and global security.
The UN reiterated its call for restraint, emphasizing that escalating military posturing could have far-reaching humanitarian and geopolitical consequences.
Secretary-General Guterres’s office stressed that continued engagement through diplomatic channels remains the most viable path to preventing conflict and maintaining peace in the region.
