France, UK Propose One-Month Truce in Ukraine, Macron Says

LONDON, March 3 (Alliance News): France and Britain have proposed a one-month ceasefire in Ukraine, covering air, sea, and energy infrastructure, following crisis talks in London, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday.

In an interview with Le Figaro, Macron stated that the truce would not initially apply to ground combat due to the difficulty of monitoring the vast front line.

He added that European peacekeepers could be deployed later, though “there won’t be European troops on Ukrainian soil in the coming weeks.”

Macron also urged European nations to increase defense spending to 3.0–3.5% of GDP in response to Russia’s military buildup, noting that Moscow has been allocating 10% of its GDP to defense for the past three years.

In a separate interview with Il Foglio, he emphasized the need for a “strong Italy” to help resolve the Ukraine conflict.

However, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni dismissed the idea of Italy contributing to any peacekeeping force, stating it was “never on the agenda.”
