North Korea Test-Fires Weapons from New ‘Choe Hyon-Class’ Warship

SEOUL, Apr 30 (Alliance News): North Korea has test-fired cruise and anti-air missiles from its newly unveiled “Choe Hyon-class” warship, marking the first weapons test for the vessel, state-run KCNA reported Wednesday.

The test, observed by leader Kim Jong Un and top military officials, also included artillery fire, signaling Pyongyang’s growing focus on strengthening its maritime capabilities.

Kim Jong Un reportedly emphasized that the time had come for North Korea’s navy to accelerate nuclear armament, asserting it was essential for protecting national sovereignty and defense at sea.

The ship was revealed publicly last week in Nampo, described by KCNA as a 5,000-tonne multipurpose destroyer equipped with North Korea’s “most powerful weapons.” It is expected to enter active service by early next year.

However, analysts have cast doubts on the warship’s operational readiness. Satellite imagery reviewed by the U.S.-based think tank 38 North suggested the ship lacked a fully functional propulsion system.

Tugboats were reportedly used to reposition the vessel, which was later returned to a floating drydock—an indicator that further work might be needed before it becomes seaworthy.

South Korea’s defence ministry confirmed that intelligence agencies from both Seoul and Washington are closely monitoring North Korea’s naval developments and shipbuilding progress.

The Choe Hyon-class destroyer is named after anti-Japanese revolutionary fighter Choe Hyon, reflecting Pyongyang’s continued emphasis on revolutionary legacy and symbolism in its military assets.
