Hamas Files Legal Challenge Against UK Ban

LONDON, April 11, 2025 (Alliance News): The Palestinian resistance group Hamas has submitted a formal legal application to the British Home Office, challenging the UK government’s ban on the organization.

According to international media, the application was filed through a London-based law firm on behalf of senior Hamas leader Musa Abu Marzouk.

The legal plea contends that Palestinians have a right under international law to self-determination, sovereignty, and resistance to foreign occupation, including armed resistance.

The submission argues that the UK’s 2021 decision to proscribe the entire Hamas organization as a terrorist entity is flawed, as Hamas has no operational activity within the United Kingdom and poses no threat to its national security.

The legal team further stated that the ban violates human rights protections, particularly those enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights.

The UK originally designated Hamas’ military wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, as a terrorist organization in 2001.

This designation was expanded in 2021 to include the entire group, making it a criminal offense to support or promote Hamas in the UK.
