BERLIN, Jul 7 (Alliance News): German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Sunday, reaffirming Germany’s commitment to deepen cooperation with China in promoting openness, mutual benefit, fair trade, and joint efforts to address pressing global challenges.
Chancellor Merz highlighted the continued positive development of Germany-China relations, noting progress across multiple sectors including politics, economics, and trade.
He emphasized that deepening this relationship serves the core interests of both nations.
Reaffirming Berlin’s longstanding position, Merz reiterated the new German government’s commitment to the one-China policy, a cornerstone of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi—also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee—noted that the recent phone call between President Xi Jinping and Chancellor Merz had provided “strategic guidance and political assurance” for strengthening bilateral ties.
Wang emphasized that China-Germany relations, as a mature partnership between two major global players, are not directed by or dependent upon any third party. “The relationship enjoys strong internal momentum and demonstrates a high degree of stability,” he said.
He welcomed the pragmatic and constructive approach of the new German government in advancing ties with Beijing and expressed China’s readiness to deepen high-level engagement and fully utilize bilateral dialogue mechanisms.
“China looks forward to maintaining close, high-level exchanges and fostering stable, sustainable development in China-Germany relations,” Wang said. “This will not only benefit our two countries but will also contribute positively to Europe and the wider global community.”
Wang added that China is pleased to witness Germany’s development and growing role in European and international affairs.
