WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Alliance News): United States Vice President JD Vance said on Sunday that a negotiated settlement between Russia and Ukraine is unlikely to fully satisfy either side, but stressed Washington’s goal is to achieve an agreement both Moscow and Kyiv can accept.
“It’s not going to make anybody super happy. Both the Russians and the Ukrainians, probably, at the end of the day, are going to be unhappy with it,” Vance said in an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures.
His remarks came two days after US President Donald Trump announced he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska on August 15 to discuss ending the war in Ukraine, now in its fourth year.
Trump suggested that a ceasefire deal was close and could involve Ukraine ceding significant territory to Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the idea of territorial concessions, stating on Saturday, “Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupiers,” and underscoring that any deal must comply with Ukraine’s constitution.
Vance said the US is working to coordinate talks involving Trump, Putin, and Zelensky, but argued it would be unproductive for Putin and Zelensky to meet before Putin holds discussions with Trump.
“We’re at a point now where we’re trying to figure out, frankly, scheduling and things like that, around when these three leaders could sit down and discuss an end to this conflict,” Vance said.
A White House official later confirmed that Trump remains open to a trilateral summit, but that planning is currently focused on the bilateral meeting requested by Putin.
