Bangladesh seizes $6.2bn in assets linked to Sheikh Hasina, associates

DHAKA, July 15 : Bangladesh has confiscated assets worth 760 billion taka (approximately $6.2 billion) linked to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, members of her family and 10 business groups as part of an ongoing anti-corruption crackdown, authorities said on Wednesday.

The asset seizures follow investigations launched after Hasina was removed from power during a student-led mass uprising in 2024 and subsequently left for India.

According to the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), authorities have frozen assets worth 570 billion taka within Bangladesh and an additional 190 billion taka overseas.

Presenting the agency’s annual report, BFIU chief Ikhtiar Mohammad Mamun said investigators had registered 98 cases involving Sheikh Hasina and individuals or entities associated with her.

“We are still working to recover the money laundered overseas,” Mamun told reporters. “We hope to share positive developments by the end of this year.”

Bangladesh’s authorities have been examining the financial affairs of the former prime minister, her relatives and several major business groups accused of benefiting during her 15-year tenure in office.

Since leaving Bangladesh, Hasina has been convicted in absentia in several corruption-related cases, including cases linked to the allocation of residential plots in an upscale area of the capital, Dhaka.

A separate court has also sentenced her to death over crimes against humanity.

Hasina has remained in India since August 2024 after departing Bangladesh following the political unrest. According to recent remarks, she has said she intends to return to Bangladesh before the end of the year.

Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said the government continued to pursue her extradition and wanted her to return to face legal proceedings.

“The verdict will be implemented. The court will decide whether there is any scope for an appeal,” the minister said.
