Lukashenko Welcomes Peking University President as Belarus-China Research Center Set to Open at BSU

MINSK, Jul 15 (Alliance News): Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko met with President of Peking University Gong Qihuang on Monday, underscoring Belarus’s strong academic and technological partnership with China.

The high-level meeting coincided with the visit of a delegation from Peking University for the official opening of the Belarus-China Center for Fundamental Research at Belarusian State University (BSU).

This milestone follows up on a meeting held on 25 June 2024, where President Lukashenko met with Party Secretary of Peking University Hao Ping and other Chinese academic representatives.

At that time, Lukashenko welcomed the proposal to establish a joint research center, declaring that Belarus was ready to collaborate fully and even share sensitive technologies not yet available in China. “You are our friends, our brothers. You can count on us,” he had said.

The initiative aims to deepen scientific collaboration between Belarus and China. The research center, jointly hosted at BSU and Peking University, will serve as a hub for both fundamental and applied research, promoting interdisciplinary cooperation across science and technology fields.

The Chinese branch of the center was inaugurated at Peking University in November 2024, laying the groundwork for today’s corresponding launch in Minsk.

President Lukashenko expressed hope that this joint venture would drive innovation and enhance the quality of education and research, particularly in training scientific specialists.

The Belarus-China research partnership reflects the broader strategic cooperation between the two countries, extending beyond academia into technological, economic, and diplomatic domains.

Founded in 1898, Peking University is one of China’s top academic institutions, with over 50,000 students, including 3,000 international scholars. Its collaboration with BSU is expected to further elevate Belarus’s role in global scientific development.
