Modi Unlikely to Attend G7 Summit in Canada Amid Strained Ties

NEW DELHI, Jun 02 (Alliance News): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is unlikely to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Canada due to ongoing diplomatic tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa, Indian media reported, citing official sources.

Sources familiar with the matter revealed that there has been no official communication from either side regarding Modi’s potential visit.

They emphasized that bilateral relations must improve before such a high-level visit can take place. If the visit were considered, they added, security arrangements would also be a major concern.

This marks the first time in six years that PM Modi will skip the G7 summit, scheduled to take place from June 15 to 17 in Kananaskis, Alberta.

Diplomatic ties between India and Canada have remained strained since the 2023 assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada.

The incident led to the expulsion of six Indian diplomats, including India’s head of mission in Ottawa, over allegations of involvement in the killing.

While uncertainty surrounds Modi’s attendance, several countries including South Africa, Ukraine, and Australia have reportedly accepted Canada’s invitations to the summit.

The G7 group comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, along with the European Union’s top representatives.
