WASHINGTON, Jul 9 (Alliance News): U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is expected to visit Japan next week as part of the American delegation attending the World Exposition in Osaka, a Treasury Department official disclosed on Tuesday.
Though details remain limited, Bessent’s visit is anticipated to coincide with the U.S. National Day at the Expo on July 19, which will feature a series of entertainment and cultural programs. His visit comes amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Tokyo, following President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 25% tariff on Japanese imports effective August 1.
Bessent, who plays a central role in the ongoing tariff negotiations, will be making his first trip to Japan since Trump resumed office in January for a second nonconsecutive term.
It is still unclear whether Bessent will hold meetings with Japanese trade officials, including Ryosei Akazawa, Japan’s chief tariff negotiator, as no official talks have yet been confirmed.
The announcement comes as trade discussions between the two nations appear to be at an impasse, raising concerns among global markets and industry stakeholders. Observers are closely watching Bessent’s visit for any sign of progress or further escalation in the trade standoff.
