Russia offers mediation for India-Pakistan tensions over Kashmir

Russia, May 5 (Alliance News): Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov extended an offer of assistance to Pakistan in resolving the rising tensions with India over Kashmir, particularly following the deadly attack in Pahalgam on April 22.

Lavrov conveyed Russia’s readiness to support a political settlement during a conversation with Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Sunday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement highlighting the growing tension between New Delhi and Islamabad, emphasizing Moscow’s willingness to act as a mediator, should both Pakistan and India express mutual interest in de-escalating the situation.

The ministry underscored Russia’s commitment to facilitating dialogue in light of the recent terrorist attack in the Pahalgam area of the Kashmir valley, which claimed at least 26 lives.

Lavrov’s call for peace comes after discussions with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, where he also urged for a resolution to the ongoing conflict between the neighboring countries. The attack in Pahalgam, located in the Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir region, has heightened concerns in the region, with Kashmir being a long-standing flashpoint for multiple wars and conflicts.

The Russian offer to mediate is significant, as Moscow has long been a key defense partner for India, supplying a significant portion of its military equipment.

The longstanding ties between India and Russia date back to the Soviet era, but Russia has now shown interest in playing a role in facilitating peace between the two nuclear-armed nations.
