WASHINGTON, March 20 (Alliance News): US President Donald Trump has given Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a two-month deadline to negotiate a new nuclear deal, according to Axios.
Sources briefed on the letter said the timeline could start either upon delivery or the beginning of negotiations. If Iran rejects the offer, the risk of military action by the US or Israel against Iran’s nuclear sites may rise.
Described as “tough,” the letter urges Tehran to engage in talks while warning of serious consequences if nuclear advancements continue. Trump reportedly made it clear he would not allow indefinite negotiations.
The letter, delivered last week by UAE diplomat Anwar Gargash, came as Khamenei dismissed negotiations, arguing they would only “tighten the sanctions knot” rather than provide relief.
Iran’s foreign ministry stated that Tehran is reviewing the letter and will respond once its assessment is complete.
Since returning to office in January, Trump has reinstated his “maximum pressure” policy to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions, despite Tehran’s repeated denials of seeking nuclear weapons.
