MOSCOW, Feb 11 (Alliance News): Chinese President Xi Jinping has accepted Russia’s invitation to attend the 80th-anniversary celebrations of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, Russian Ambassador to China Igor Morgulov confirmed.
The event, set for May 9 in Moscow, marks the Soviet victory in what Russians call the Great Patriotic War.
The Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War II, including millions from Ukraine, before ultimately defeating Nazi forces in 1945.
Victory Day remains Russia’s most significant secular holiday. While Western nations commemorate the surrender of Nazi Germany on May 8, Moscow observes Victory Day on May 9, as the surrender took effect past midnight in Russian time.
In return, Xi Jinping has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to China for a similar commemoration of the war’s end.
