ARLINGTON, Jul 13 (Alliance News): Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal will look to continue his remarkable rise when he faces France captain Kylian Mbappe in a highly anticipated FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final on Tuesday, with a place in the final at stake.
The clash brings together two of world football’s brightest stars, as 18-year-old Yamal hopes to follow in Mbappe’s footsteps by winning the World Cup as a teenager.
Mbappe achieved that feat in 2018 when he helped France lift the trophy at just 19 years of age, becoming only the second teenager after Brazil legend Pele to score in a World Cup final.
Now, Yamal has the opportunity to write his own chapter in football history.
The Barcelona winger has already announced himself on the international stage after playing a key role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph, including a stunning goal against France in the semi-finals that helped eliminate Mbappe’s side.
Spain head into Tuesday’s contest aiming to reach the FIFA World Cup final for the first time since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
Yamal has scored once in the tournament so far but has remained one of Spain’s most dangerous attacking players despite battling a hamstring injury shortly before the World Cup began.
He made his tournament debut as a substitute in Spain’s opening draw against Cape Verde before scoring in a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia. Since then, he has started every match, although he has yet to add another goal.
Spain captain Rodri believes the young forward should remain patient.
“I think Lamine needs to calm the anxiety he sometimes has because he wants to show how important he is for the team,” Rodri said.
“He already demonstrated incredible maturity during the European Championship, and everyone knows what he can do.”
While Spain rely on Yamal’s creativity and pace, France once again look to Mbappe for inspiration.
The 27-year-old captain has enjoyed another outstanding World Cup campaign, scoring eight goals to move level with Lionel Messi in the race for the Golden Boot. He is also just one goal away from matching the all-time World Cup scoring record.
Mbappe has already won the World Cup in 2018 and scored a hat-trick in the dramatic 2022 final. He is now aiming to guide France into a third consecutive World Cup final, a feat achieved by very few nations.
The French star said his priority remains helping his country win another title.
“My only focus is helping the team and getting us back into the final,” Mbappe said after France’s quarter-final victory.
France have rediscovered their attacking form during the tournament and will enter the semi-final with confidence after producing several convincing performances in the knockout rounds.
The match also renews an emerging rivalry between Yamal and Mbappe, who have faced each other frequently in club football since Mbappe joined Real Madrid.
Interestingly, Yamal has enjoyed the better record in those meetings.
According to available statistics, Mbappe has suffered eight defeats and recorded only two victories in 10 matches against Yamal for club and country.
Tuesday’s encounter is expected to be another fascinating battle between two generations of football stars—one already an established World Cup champion, the other a teenage prodigy seeking to create history.
With a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on the line, all eyes will be on Arlington as Spain and France battle for a chance to compete for football’s biggest prize.
