Bangladeshi Students to Launch Political Party After Hasina’s Ouster

DHAKA, Feb 24 (Alliance News): The student-led movement that played a key role in the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to transform into a political party this week, sources confirmed on Monday.

The Students Against Discrimination (SAD) group, which initiated protests against public sector job quotas, later expanded into a nationwide uprising that forced Hasina to flee to India in August 2024. According to sources, the new party is expected to be launched on Wednesday.

Nahid Islam, a student leader currently serving as an adviser to the interim government, is likely to lead the party as convener. He is expected to resign from his government role to focus on the new political entity.

The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has been in charge since Hasina’s departure. Yunus has indicated that elections could be held by late 2025 but has ruled out his own participation.

Bangladesh has remained in turmoil since Hasina’s exit, with over 1,000 casualties reported during the protests. The UN Human Rights Commission recently accused Hasina’s former government of serious violations against demonstrators, though she and her party deny any wrongdoing.
