Kuwait approves amendments to nationality law

KUWAIT CITY, Aug 19 (Alliance News): The Kuwaiti Cabinet on Wednesday approved a draft decree-law amending several provisions of the country’s 1959 Nationality Law, introducing stricter measures against nationality fraud and allowing the issuance of electronic nationality certificates.

The amendments, approved during the weekly Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, allow nationality to be revoked from children or descendants found to have knowingly benefited from fraudulent additions to nationality files.

Under the amendments, the Interior Minister will issue nationality certificates in digital form after verifying their validity. The electronic certificates will have the same legal status as traditional paper certificates.

The draft law also introduces political restrictions on naturalized citizens, barring them from voting, contesting elections or being appointed to legislative bodies.

The electronic certificate will replace the paper document for legal and administrative purposes, with the Interior Ministry responsible for setting rules governing its issuance, verification, use, suspension and cancellation.

The draft decree-law will now go through the legislative process before becoming effective.
