TEHRAN, May 26 (Alliance News): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian on Monday reaffirmed their shared commitment to strengthen and expand bilateral relations across multiple sectors including trade, regional peace, and counterterrorism.
The prime minister is currently on an official visit to Iran at the invitation of President Pezeshkian. He is accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, and SAPM Syed Tariq Fatemi.
Upon arrival at the Presidential Palace, Prime Minister Shehbaz was presented with a guard of honor and later held formal bilateral talks with the Iranian President.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister thanked the Iranian leadership for its concern and solidarity with Pakistan during the recent conflict with India and appreciated Iran’s offer to mediate for peace in the region. He briefed the Iranian side on India’s aggressive posture, highlighting Pakistan’s continued commitment to the ceasefire agreement.
Both leaders acknowledged the deep-rooted cultural, historical, and religious ties between the two countries and expressed their resolve to build stronger economic and strategic cooperation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that terrorism posed a major threat to regional stability and stressed the need for joint efforts to combat it, keeping in view the designs of external actors.
He reiterated that lasting peace in South Asia could not be achieved without resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
President Pezeshkian welcomed the Pakistani delegation and assured that Iran would take further steps to promote regional stability. Both leaders also agreed that peace and progress in Afghanistan were crucial for the broader stability of the region.
On economic cooperation, the Prime Minister stressed increasing bilateral trade volume and resolving issues related to the Iran-Pakistan Gas Pipeline through mutual consultation.
He also condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, terming them genocidal, and called for immediate steps towards a two-state solution as per the UN Security Council resolutions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz invited President Pezeshkian to visit Pakistan, which the Iranian leader accepted.
